Why Ventilation Matters

When a car engine runs, it releases carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and other toxic gases. Even a few minutes of idling in an enclosed garage can create dangerous concentrations. Add to that the vapours from petrol, paint, and cleaning products, and you have a cocktail of pollutants that can linger in the air.

For most Australian homes, a hybrid approach works best: natural ventilation for everyday air exchange, and mechanical ventilation when working with engines, paints, or solvents.

How to Size Your Ventilation System

To effectively remove exhaust fumes and vapours, the air in your garage should be replaced several times per hour. As a general guide:

  • At least 6 air changes per hour for basic storage.
  • 10–15 air changes per hour if you regularly run engines or use chemicals.

To calculate the fan capacity you need, multiply your garage’s volume (length × width × height) by the desired number of air changes. The result gives you the airflow rate in cubic metres per hour (m³/h) or cubic feet per minute (CFM), depending on the fan’s specifications.

Positioning Air Inlets and Outlets

For ventilation to work efficiently, fresh air must enter from one side and stale air must exit from another.

  • Air inlets should be placed low, ideally near the garage door or an external wall.
  • Exhaust outlets should be positioned high and on the opposite side, ensuring air moves through the entire space.

If you often start engines indoors, consider installing a flexible exhaust hose that connects directly to the vehicle’s tailpipe. This setup removes fumes before they spread through the garage.

Managing Moisture and Condensation

Moisture is a common issue in Australian garages, especially in coastal or humid regions. When you park a wet car inside, the water evaporates and can condense on walls and ceilings. Over time, this leads to rust, mould, and unpleasant odours.

A ventilation system that combines exhaust fans with fresh air inlets helps keep humidity under control. In particularly damp areas, a dehumidifier can be a useful addition, especially if you store tools, timber, or other sensitive materials.

Noise is another factor to consider. Choose a quiet fan model if it will run continuously or if your garage is close to living areas or neighbours. Many modern fans are designed to operate efficiently with minimal sound.

Maintenance and Safety Tips

To keep your ventilation system working effectively, perform regular maintenance. Clean vents and filters a few times a year, and check that fans run smoothly without unusual noise or vibration. If you use an exhaust extraction hose, inspect it for cracks or leaks.

Remember, ventilation is only part of the safety equation. Avoid unnecessary idling, store chemicals in sealed containers, and keep your garage tidy to prevent accidents.
